King's Bruton and Hazlegrove School:
The King’s School, Bruton Foundation comprises two schools – King’s Bruton and Hazlegrove – and offers the opportunity for a continuity of outstanding education for girls and boys from 3 to 18. The two schools are united by a common set of values and principles and bound by a shared history that stretches back to the foundation of King’s 500 years ago in 1519.
Academic Programmes: At King’s we are committed to providing excellent teaching, small class sizes and enrichment opportunities for pupils in an environment that helps nurture and promote intellectual and emotional development. Teaching at King’s is innovative and allows for every pupil’s specific needs to be met. The GCSE curriculum is designed to provide breadth and balance for pupils and to provide them with the necessary skills and intellectual development to progress into the 6th Form and beyond. Built around a core of Mathematics, English, Science and the Languages, it offers opportunities for pupils to select subjects that are of particular interest. In the 6th Form, pupils are able to select from an extensive range of subjects that will not only serve to challenge them, but to help provide and promote curiosity, enthusiasm and motivation. Academic rigour and a co-ordinated programme of support has meant that 98% of pupils at King’s are accepted into their first choice university and this includes Oxbridge, International, Medical and Russell Group Universities.
Boarding: At King’s Bruton there are seven boarding houses. We are proud of the fact that day pupils do not have a separate house but are fully integrated as members of one of the seven boarding houses. Our boarding was recently rated “outstanding” during an inspection. We were pleased that Inspectors have highlighted how this Independent Boarding School provides an outstanding level of care for the children it accommodates
Creative Art: Music plays a vital part in the life of King’s. Musicians of all levels are encouraged to perform on a regular basis, there are over forty public performances every year and a vast variety of choirs and ensembles catering for every level. We have a team of dedicated peripatetic specialists to teach, support and guide pupils in their progress. Drama is stronger than ever at King’s with the dedicated Fitzjames Theatre being crammed full with a busy schedule each term. There is an energetic and highly productive Drama programme for the whole School. Indeed, Drama is open to everyone at King’s, be it on stage basking in the spotlight, or being part of the vital backstage team responsible for the smooth running of shows. The video below provides an outline of Drama at King's.
Sports: Sport within the School plays a key role in providing camaraderie, leadership and teamwork opportunities, and challenges both physical and mental, and sees pupils given the chance to display empathy, confidence, creativity, determination and self-discipline. Sport offers opportunities to cultivate communication and leadership skills, to work as part of a team, and to develop resilience by learning to meet success and failure head-on. Most importantly, participation in sport is an excellent way to improve health and well-being. It helps all our pupils to learn to take responsibility for themselves, setting them up for later life by teaching them the importance of maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
