Founded in 973 AD, King’s Ely is situated in the historic market town of Ely in rural Cambridgeshire, which is home to one of the most glorious cathedrals in the world. The school enjoys a tranquil setting, just 20 minutes from the beautiful university city of Cambridge and a five minute walk from the river, where King’s Ely and Cambridge University students row. Ely is a safe and very peaceful town, allowing students freedom of movement in a friendly, secure and inspiring environment, which is within walking distance from national rail links and just a short drive from all London airports.

Culture and community

Our philosophy is to be inclusive, nurturing each individual student and providing a challenging and inspiring learning environment for all of our pupils. Courtesy, respect and integrity are strongly encouraged and there is a strong sense of community. Pupils are happy, well-motivated, friendly and they are empowered to achieve beyond their own and their parents’ expectations.

Academic standards are high and pupils are expected to give of their best at all times, taking commitment for their own studies and thinking for themselves. King’s Ely is a centre of excellence for Chemistry and Maths and the school is a recipient of the coveted NACE award for the excellent standard of teaching and learning.

As well as offering GCSE, IGCSE and A Level courses in King’s Ely Senior for those whose English language is of a high standard, we also provide overseas students with less competent English skills access to the very best of independent British education, offering a Pre-GCSE course (age 14-15), an Intensive One-Year IGCSE course (pre-A Level, age 15 -16) and a two and four week Summer School (age 13 -16). Our international students are fully integrated into the life of King’s Ely, providing them with the opportunity to immerse themselves in British life and culture and improve their academic and language skills.

King’s Ely boasts a well-equipped modern Music School and the backcloth of Ely Cathedral, the perfect setting for concerts and performances. A recently built Art School reflects the outstanding standards of the Art department with an impressive display of students’ work in Photography, Design, Textiles and Fine Art. Dance and Drama departments also enjoy splendid new facilities.

The school offers all of the major sports and an impressive array of other exciting activities. Rowing, football and hockey are particularly strong, with many of our students representing national and regional teams.

Boarders live in picturesque historic boarding houses, comfortably converted and well-led by caring Housemasters and Housemistresses. The Sixth Form and the boarding facilities for International girls are housed in the newly re-furbished medieval Old Palace – a truly special place to live and work. Students dine in the Monastic Barn. King’s Ely International students board with British school children in throughout their studies.
